With 15 years of practice experience as an attorney, Kyonzte Toombs won a seat on Nashville’s Metro Council in the Sept. 12 runoff, beating an incumbent after placing second of four candidates in the August general election.
Prior to her race, Toombs was an established and respected community leader. She has served as president of the Napier-Looby Bar Association a predominantly African-American legal group and as president of the Rosebank Elementary School PTA. Additionally, she is a founding board member of the Equity Alliance, which proactively advocates for people of color to be equipped to fully engage in the civic process. She has served on the boards of the Lawyers Association for Women, Marion Griffin Chapter, as well as being a member of the Nashville Bar Association, Nashville Emerging Leaders, and the Tennessee Bar Association Leadership Law Program (TBALL).
Toombs moved to Nashville in 1997 to attend Vanderbilt University, from which she graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Arts in African-American Studies in 2001. She is a graduate of Vanderbilt Law School and also earned her Masters in Business Administration from Emory University’s Goizueta Business School and Master of Laws in Tax from the University of Alabama.
